can use leaves, bark and fruit

very sacred tree - always near a Shiva temple, Lord Shiva loves these leaves- highly spiritual

physically leaves resemble third eye and eyes of face

Rasa: astringent, sweet, slightly bitter

Virya: cooling

Vipak: sweet

Action on Doshas: V ^ P v K v


natural source of pectin, tannin

active principle - marmelosin vaso-constrictor, hemostatic, fibrin inducing, increases platelets, depleted platelet counting leads to bleeding

anti-pyretic - because cooling, anti-amoebic, anti-parasitic

grahi - binding, stool binding

dipana - kindles agni and pachana - detoxification of ama

hemostatic - rakta skandana

shotha hara - reduces swellings, anti-inflammatory

spiritual action - awakens third eye


tx diarrhea, amoebic dysentery, bacillic dysentery, ulceration, bleeding disorders

diarrhea - 1/2 tsp. bilva TID with honey + ghee

krumi - parasites - 1/2 tsp. bilva + 1/2 tsp. vidanga with warm water

rectal bleeding - 1/2 tsp. bilva + 1 tsp. jaggary

canker sores, labial herpes, abscess ulcer - 1 tsp. bilva tea + 1 cup water boil

gingivitis, peptic ulcer, stomatitis - gargle with bilva tea

genital herpes - wash area with bilva tea

high cholesterol - 1/2 tsp. bilva + 1 tsp. honey or bilva tea + honey

obesity - kutki + bilva for scraping of fat

diabetes - 1/3 tsp. bilva + 1/3 tsp. turmeric + 1/3 tsp. neem

whooping cough, paroxysm cough- 1/2 tsp. bilva + 1/2 tsp. sitopaladi

put drop of bilva oil on third eye for migraines, awakening of intelligence

bilva is best for treating cellulites
