//The patient is to continue taking the herbs as well as following a Vata soothing diet/lifestyle.//
Is medicated herbal enema. It is the best method to soothe Vata disturbances. A study on __Anxiety/Neurosis/Panic Attacks__ showed that patients who had enemas as well as oral herbal capsules showed the best improvement of 80%. Others who only had oral herbal capsules reported a 60% improvement, while those who had herbal capsules with Shirodhara reported a 70% improvement. Thus, Basti, or medicated herbal enema, is the best method to treat Vata disturbances.
Vata people have vishama agnis, and thus they do not absorb herbs or food very well. Therefore, instead of going through the whole digestive process, through Basti we go the opposite way, i.e. from the colon. This is because the colon is Kashaya, i.e. astringent, which corresponds to the last phase of digestion. Absorption takes place during this stage, the absorption of minerals and water and other things. This is the whole principle behind suppositories, which are rapidly assimilated into the body via the colon. Through Basti the colon assimilates and absorbs the herbs more effectively.
* **Dashamula Basti:** is recommended for patient. The patient is to boil 2 tbsp of [[Dashamula]] in 20 oz of water for 10 minutes until reduced to about 16 oz. Strain and let cool a little bit (should be warm not cold, yet not boiling hot). Add 2 cups of sesame oil. Insert into colon using an enema bag. Lie on the left for 5 min, then on the back for 5 min, and on the right for 5 min to allow the decoction to travel in the descending, transverse and ascending colon respectively.\\ \\__Sesame oil is to be used if there is no ama on tongue. If ama is present then no oil is to be used in the Basti.__
The patient is advised to take this herbal formula for a month prior to traveling to Central Asia. Mahasudarshan is a very bitter formula containing many liver/blood herbs as well as Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). This formula is the Ayurvedic preventative for the whole immune system.
To treat it the patient must take 1 tsp Triphala at bedtime in a cup of hot water on an empty stomach. If it does not work then he should take 1 tsp of Psyllium in a cup of water at bed time on an empty stomach, and 1 tsp of Triphala in a cup of water upon awakening on an empty stomach.
//Patient still shows symptoms of Vata disturbances. This is because herbs are only 5% of the cure, and the proper Vata soothing diet, exercise and lifestyle should be followed in order to get the rest of the 95% cure. If you do not change the lifestyle then the body will not respond t the herbs, and you will have to change the formula. Herbs only serve to push the disease over the edge to remove it. Also Dr. Lad says that it takes as long to remove a disease by its roots (i.e. to totally eradicate it) as it did to create it. This means that if you had been Vata disturbed for 10 years, then you will probably need another 10 years to totally eradicate this disturbance.
