 +[[kapha balancing diet]]
 +
 +
+The [[food]] we eat is that unique aspect of our [[life]] which we have almost total control over. Because we are what we eat, according to [[Ayurveda]], it can be a very [[power]]ful tool for [[balancing]] and for promoting and maintaining [[health]]. One ancient [[authority]] says that [[food]] is our [[medicine]] -- a [[good]] [[regime]]n of [[diet]] is [[wort]]h a [[hundred]] [[drug]]s but no amount of [[drug]]s can overcome a [[poor]] [[regime]]n of [[diet]]. Generallly, one should eat [[warm]], [[fresh]]ly [[cooked food]]s. We can use the [[taste]]s in [[food]] as a guide to what [[qualities]] those [[food]]s have. For example, [[food]]s which have [[bitter]], [[pungent]], and [[astringent]] [[taste]]s have those [[qualities]] (especially [[lightness]], [[dryness]], and [[warm]]th) necessary to [[balance kapha]] [[qualities]] of [[heavy]], [[cold]], [[oil]]y, etc.  We will [[give]] below examples of [[food]]s with these [[taste]]s [[common]] in our culture. This information has been provided by [[Dr.]] [[Vasant Lad]], in his book: [[Ayurvedic Cooking for Self Healing]] and [[Maya Tiwari]] in her book [[A Life of Balance]] (www.wisearth.org).. This book is a [[good]] re[[source]] of [[knowledge]] and menus. Please note that agreement about the [[qualities]] of [[food]]s is not [[universal]]. Another important [[point]] is that a list of [[balancing]] [[food]]s is not a blanket proscription to totally avoid the [[food]]s with [[taste]]s of [[sweet]], [[sour]], [[salty]]y]] ([[heavy]] things).  Rather, do eat [[food]]s having these other [[qualities]] to help [[promote]] [[balance]] in the [[emotion]]s and in the [[physiology]] but eat them less often and in [[small]]er quantities. The [[food]]s to favor will provide a theme of [[influence]] but in a [[gentle]] and [[sustain]]ed [[way]]. Please refer to our [[Article]] " [[Incompatible Food Combinations]]" for important information about what [[food]]s are [[toxic]] ([[ama]]-creating) when eaten in the same [[meal]]. Also, refer to the [[Article]] "[[How to Eat]]" for more important [[point]]s about [[eating]]. Finally, refer to our [[Article]] "[[Cooking - Some Ayurvedic Strategies]]" for [[thought]]s about how to address family [[meal planning]] with different [[body type]]s and [[imbalance]]s.

 +SOMEthing TO CONSIDER
 +
+[[Ayurveda]] suggests modest [[fast]]ing]] to help maintain [[digestive]] capacity and to help [[burn]] off and [[release]] [[toxic]]ity. This can be accomplished by a [[juice]] [[fast]] of [[fruit]] or [[vegetable]]s taken for each [[meal]] one [[day]] per week. Review the entries above for guidance of appropriate items. Also, consider [[juice]] of romaine, [[celery]], and [[carrot]] or [[pomegranate]] [[juice]]. [[remember]], break[[fast]] is optional according to [[Ayurveda]].
