Illustrated Susruta Samhita: Text, English Translation, Notes, Appendeces and Index (In 3 Volumes)
Susruta samhita is the first authoritative book on Ayurveda. It has the distinction of being the only authentic text on ancient Indian surgery and contains the description of many wonderful surgical feats conducted by ancient Indian surgeons. Susruta, the author of the book is the pioneer in performing repair and reconstruction of mutilated organs of the humanbody, known now a days as “plastic surgery”. His method of repairing the mutilated nose-Rhinoplasty has been adopted by European surgeons under the name “The Indian method”. He was the first medical man to have conducted dissection of the human dead body and described the anatomy of the human being. He was the first surgeon in the world to insist on training the students in surgical techniques using fruits, vegetables and artificially prepared parts of the human body. He describes all aspects of surgery-pre-operative measures, method of operation in detail and post-operative care. His methods of “battle field surgery” were the most scientific methods appropriate to those days. He has described many surgical instruments which had been fabricated ideally. His surgical operation included removal of foreign bodies, treatment of bones and joints (orthopedics) wounds, obstructed labour (obstretrics) abdominal surgery, diseases of the eyes (ophthalmology) ear, nose, throat and head, urinary calculus and many more. With all these merits Sursruta samhita is considered a book“ par excellence on ancient Indian surgery”. In addition to surgery, it also deals with all other branches of Ayurveda such a Kaya cititsa (inner medicine) Agada tantra (toxicology), Balaroga (paediatrics) and doctrines of physiology, pharmacology, hygiene, maintainance of health, foods and drugs etc. Thus Susruta samhita is a classical text of Ayurveda, studied assiduously since very early times to the present day not merely by Indians but even by medical men of many western countries. The present translation is by Prof. K.R. Srikantha Murthy who has rich experience of teaching and writing spread over a span of fifty years. It is mainly aimed to help the graduate and post-graduate students of Ayurveda. It covers the entire treatise, in three volumes of translation. Each volume contains the original text in Sanskrit, translation in English, explanatory notes and pictures at many places, appendices and index. It will thus be of great help not only to students of Ayurveda but also to all those interested in knowing ancient Indian wisdom and achievements.

The Susruta-Samhita is one of the twin compendia of Ayurveda encompassing all the aspects prevalent traditionally in India and abroad since the earliest times. It represents faithfully the school of surgery which made significant contributions to principles and techniques of surgery which are surprisingly applicable even in modern era. It presents the status of ancient Indian surgery comprehensively and as such is in great demand among scholars all over the world.
The present edition of the Susruta-Samhita is singular in the sense that, besides presenting faithful translation of the text, it brings forth, for the first time, the English translation of the Nibandha-Sangraha commentary by Dalhana who is regarded as the authority on the subject. The commentary supplements the text in many respects and as such proves an essential tool for understanding the Samhita clearly and fully. Notes are also given here and there to elaborate the ideas with critical analysis.
The text has also been checked and modified according to the readings accepted by Dalhana. Plants and other substances are also identified as interpreted by Dalhana. At the end of the text appendices are given which are very useful.

Susruta’s name is synonymous with India’s surgical inheritance. A legendary figure, he is believed to have lived and taught in Varanasi several centuries before the Buddha, and composed the Susruta Tantra which became a timeless medical classic. Though the original text was lost long ago a redaction by Nagarjuna survived as Susruta Samhita and won universal acclaim. The Samhita is a study of the human condition in health and disease with undisguised emphasis on surgery, and rivals Caraka’s classic in authority.
In The Legacy of Susruta, the text of Susruta Samhita has been recast in a thematic fashion without sacrificing any of the content of the original chapters. Furthermore, it presents much of the data in tabular form, and features many tables and illustrations in an effort to reach out to readers who may include not only students of ayurveda but also of modern medicine, biological and social sciences and the history of science.

This synopsis of Ayurveda offers a new translation from the original Sanskrit of Susruta Samhita – the 2500-year-old surgical treatise, originally written by Susruta, the father of surgery. Though the book focuses mainly on surgery, it provides a comprehensive survey of various aspects of medicine, such as anatomy, physiology, pediatrics, gynecology, pharmacology, and psychiatry. It also has useful sections on poisons, training the student, and care of the newborn.
This translation condenses the original eighteen chapters into fourteen, using modern medical idiom. As the allopathic system of medicine is increasingly being criticised for its inability to relate to the lifestyle of an individual and its helplessness against side-effects of drugs, this book successfully highlights the ancient Indian holistic system of medicine. Medical historians, general practitioners, Sanskritists, and others will find this unique approach interesting and enlightening. http://www.vedicbooks.net/synopsis-of-ayurveda-based-on-a-translation-of-the-susruta-samhita-the-treatise-of-susruta-p-14096.html

Sushruta Samhita: An English Translation based on original Sanskrit Texts (In 3 Volumes) by Kaviraj Kunja lal bhishagratna
The Practice of surgery has been recorded in India around 800 B. C. This need not come as a surprise because surgery (Shastrakarma) is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda the ancient Indian System of medicine. The oldest Samhita ( Shushuta’s compendium). Sushruta Samhita is the only complete book we have which deals with the problems of practical surgery and midwifery. Shushruta was one of the first to study the human anatomy. In the Shusruta Samhita he has described in detail the study of anatomy. Shusruta’s forte was rhinoplasty (Plastic surgery) and ophthalmology (ejection of cataracts).
Shushruta has described surgery under eight heads Chedya (excision), Lekhya (scarification), Vedhya (puncturing), Esya (exploration), Ahrya (extraction), Vsraya (evacuation) and Sivya (Suturing). Perhaps the greatest contribution of Shushruta was the operation of rhinoplasty (restoration of a multilated nose by plastic survey). The detailed description of the rhinoplasty operation in the Shusurta Samhita is amazingly meticulous and comprehensive. These is evidence to show that his success in this kind of surgery was very high, which attracted people from all over the country and perhaps even from outside.
Shushruta moved by his intense humane approach to life and equipped with superb surgical skills, elevated the art of surgery to the status of a practical science. The details of the steps of this operation, as recorded in the Shushruta Samhita, are amazingly similar to the steps that are followed even to-day in such advanced plastic surgery.
