The 20 attributes or gunas are:

Guna is a specialized arrangement of molecules to yield the attributes of that substancequality is experience; experience associated with attribute - example: sugar - touch with the tongue and sugar increases the sweet quality within you (“like attracts like”).

Vata versus Pitta versus Kapha (space-air) versus (fire-water) versus (water-earth)

Vata dry versus Pitta oily versus Kapha very oily

Vata light versus Pitta light versus Kapha heavy

Vata cold versus Pitta hot versus Kapha cool

Vata rough versus Pitta liquid versus Kapha soft

Vata subtle versus Pitta subtle versus Kapha gross

Vata very mobile and scattered versus Pitta mobile and focused versus Kapha stable and relaxed

Vata scattered versus Pitta sharp (penetrating) versus Kapha dull

Vata dispersing or scattering versus Pitta spreading (name and fame, rash, virus) versus Kapha dense and static

Vata fast versus Pitta fast versus Kapha slow

Sankhya says: “cause and effect” - without cause there is no effect. So, one must concentrate on quality of life, relationships, environment, etc.

Purusha is beyond cause and effect. It is not cause, therefore, it cannot be effect. Prakruti is the cause and the effect. Death is simply to go back to the causeeffect is what we are…example: clay is the cause; pitcher is the effect; break the pitcher and it returns to the cause. Birth is the cause of death; death is the effect. Cause and effect is a change of one state into another.

The cause of the physical is the Five element]]s: the Five element]]s are the cause of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the effect of the Five element]]s. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the cause of the physiological changes within the body.

Attributes and their Effect on the Tridosha system

Attributes and their Effect on the Tridosha system.

Heavy: That which creates heaviness in the body, heavy things nourish heavy things within the body; heaviness creates groundedness and also creates lethargy…heavy quality will… decrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

Light: light implies fasting - go away from gravity - will help digestion - does cleansing of the body: too much = space cadetincrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

slow: Present in sedentary - slows metabolism, digestion - creates relaxation, dullness, lethargy…(cheese is slow)… decrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

sharp: penetrating - immediate spreading in the body - improves digestion, quick understanding - also irritates, pe[[Netrate]]s into deep tissue - has immediate effect on the bodyincrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

cold: creates cold, numbness, congestion, unconsciousness, contractionpsychologically - fear, insensitivity, cold sweatincrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

hot: Promotes Heat, digestion, cleansing, and expansiondecrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

oily: unctuous - lubricates, soothes, gives moisture… decrease Vata, increase Pitta, increase Kapha

dry: Un-unctuous - dryness, absorption, constipation, nervousness… increase Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

slimy: decreases roughness, callousness: increases smoothness, love, and care… decrease Vata, increase Pitta, increase Kapha

rough: drying, cracking of skin, joints, bones - - - mountain climbing = rough = sitting on hard rockincrease Vata, decrease Pitta, decrease Kapha

dense: increases solidity, density, strength, tonality, congestion, foggy Mindedness… decrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

liquid: Dissolves, liquifies - maintains water/electrolyte balancedecrease Vata, increase Pitta, increase Kapha (if sour, decrease Pitta and decrease Kapha)

soft: increases softness, delicacy, relaxation, tenderness, love, care, compassion…(treat Vata like a flower]]; be hard with Kapha)… decrease Vata, increase Pitta, increase Kapha

hard: increases hardness, strength, rigidity, selfish]]ness, insensitivityincrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha / decrease Kapha (depends on which kind of hard).

static: sleeping long, no Exercise, sedentariness, increases stability, obstruction, support, constitution, and Faithdecrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

mobile: increases emotion, motion, shakiness, restlessness, lack of faith, fear, anxietyincrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

subtle: penetrates, pierces, increases emotions, feelings, Transfers emotions from un[[conscious to consciousincrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

gross: increases obstruction and obesitydecrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

cloudy: increases lack of perception, confusion, fogginess - good for healing fractures… decrease Vata, decrease Pitta, increase Kapha

clear: Pranayama, Meditation - improves learning]], increases isolation; diversifies, pacifiesincrease Vata, increase Pitta, decrease Kapha

division: (fragmentation) in Vata = separation; in Pitta = physical integrity; in Kapha = brings together. Has its opposite: positive and ne[[gative]] (note the effect on Agni)… decrease Vata, decrease Pitta / increase Pitta, increase Kapha

Using the above qualities: Healing is treating the cause and effect by using qualities opposite to that which is manifesting. This mandates a total understanding of the qualities and their effect on the body, so that one may use the opposite quality to pacify the dominant manifesting quality.—-
